you should definitely watch ‘the babysitter’ and its sequel ‘the babysitter: killer queen’ they are such a criminally underrated movie duo (or whatever you call them) it’s got some good comedy aspects since it’s a comedy-horror type film but i really do recommend the second movie is definitely a bit more on the comedy side but it’s still got great gore! def recommend watching it! ❤

This movie is horrible, and it has nothing to do with Dewey's death. As a "long time Scream fan", I definitely don't agree with your hypothesis at the end. The "callbacks" just felt like cheap key-jingling, forcing all the bland unlikable new characters to be related to the previous characters in a forced attempt to make them matter whether it makes sense or not, the random mentioning of irrelevant things like the lemon squares and what not; the movie uses these "hey, you remember this?" moments as a substitute for good writing and actual substance to the plot. Dewey's death, particularly the contrived nonsensical way it happens and the brutality of how it happens, is just a symptom of this movie's almost active disrespect for everything that came before it (same goes for Judy's death). They spell it all out in the completely unsubtle "meta-commentary" scene where they're talking about "requels" or whatever, they knew what they were doing but were trying to pretend like it was simply being meta like the previous movies by lampshading it with this scene. You took a 10 minute break after Dewey's death, I almost stopped watching and ended up taking a twenty minute break during this scene. And of course, there's the whole over-the-top "toxic fans" angle they used for the killers, basically trying to make fun of their audience that they knew they were going to piss off (rather deliberately so). My favourite scene is probably the opening (at least up until it is revealed that the sister somehow survived everything that happened to her, while other characters later on die from much less severe wounds; Dewey had to die to prove the movie "has stakes" but half the cast seem to just walk off being brutally stabbed), however, it is just all downhill from there, in my opinion. But by the time you reach the finale, it is somewhat cathartic to watch Sid and Gale beat the shit out of the new characters. Overall to me, it is just a very inconsistent poorly written movie that relies way too much on nostalgia bait while simultaneously trying to piss on the "legacy" of the original movies, so to speak, and it has the subtlety of a nuclear bomb (I managed to correctly guess the killers immediately after the cast was introduced, Amber in particular was blatant). Some of the kills are well done but there's just no substance to most of them and the characters are all pretty much cardboard cutouts with maybe 1 cliche/stereotype as their personality. It feels like something taken off of fanfiction.net or tumblr.
